The Everyday on Canalside project is supporting a number of activities around the redesign of the green space behind Canalside’s Bryant Court in Hackney.

Led by Charushila — a participatory design charity that works with local communities to transform open public spaces using reclaimed materials — the Bryant Court Garden is being transformed into a more inviting public space for residents to grow, relax and play.

In the first stage of the project, Charushila carried out community consultations to draw out ideas and engage residents, Metropolitan Housing, artists and local businesses, including a Community Fun Day in the green space in June 2014. The ideas, feedback and history of the area resulted in proposed designs that were hung in the entrance hall of Bryant Court in November 2014 for residents to comment on and help refine.

With the help of a grant from the Mayor of London’s Pocket Park Programme — administered by Groundwork London — Charushila is now working towards a built expression of this exercise.

From January to March 2015, Charushila will be working on creating a community allotment and seating area in the Bryant Court green space, using reclaimed materials such as broken pottery from the ceramics studio and old railway sleepers for constructing the allotments.  As well as engaging local businesses, this also reflects the migratory aspect of the local community and the proximity to the railway line.

For this second phase, it is working with local residents, Groundworks Trust, St. Mary’s Secret Garden (a local charity), Turning Earth, stone sculptor Gareth Shield, and Taylor Wimpey (on the nearby housing construction site).

Stay tuned for the launch day at the end of March—its going to be a lovely spring at the Bryant Court Garden!
