The Humans of Canalside project in Hackney is looking for a Photography/Film Intern to help us over the next few exciting months to produce photo and film stories in the lead-up to a big community event and exhibition. The intern will gain skills in producing and editing films, and exhibitions.

Humans of Canalside is part of the Everyday on Canalside participatory arts and community design project, led by Counterpoints Arts in partnership with Shoreditch Trust, Charushila, and photographer, Marcia Chandra. Supported by the Metropolitan Migration Foundation.

This is an unpaid internship but expenses will be covered, and we will work together to ensure that the internship results in real skills. Pending funding, there may be opportunities for paid work in the near future.

We especially welcome interest from Canalside residents and young people aged 16+.


– Arranging with local residents to interview and/or photograph/film
– Supporting interviewing and filming around the Canalside Estates
– Transcribing/editing audio-recorded interviews
– Organizing media files and supporting film editing
– Helping to produce an exhibition and outdoor film event


– Be able to commit at least 1-2 days per week for 2 months from now through March
– Interest in photography, video, journalism, documentary, storytelling
– Live locally or able to travel to the Canalside Estates in Hackney (near Haggerston Overground Station)
– Ability to learn to use computer applications and media equipment quickly and efficiently
– Excited and motivated by this type of community storytelling project

OPTIONAL SKILLS – useful to have but not required

– Experience with audio, photography or film equipment
– Video editing – e.g. Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, iMovie
– Graphic design – e.g. InDesign, Illustrator
– Social Media & Marketing – e.g. Tumblr, Facebook, Instagram
– Turkish or Vietnamese language skills
