On Saturday, March 28, together with the Canalside Residents’ Association and Youth of Haggerston, we will be hosting a very special event to celebrate the people and stories we’ve been engaging with through the Everyday on Canalside Project since June.

The day will start in the morning with the Humans of Canalside Storybooth at Hoxton Market, then move to Bryant Court to launch the redesign of the greenspace, and finally, end in a big community party with food, music and stories at the Whitmore Community Centre. We’re inviting everyone to bring their favourite food dish to share—a great way to  bring a taste of home with you to the community!

An exciting part of the event will be the Canalside Film Trail — a 1-hour guided tour through The Whitmore estate where we’ll be watching films projected onto buildings. The films feature Humans of Canalside images and stories produced since June by and about residents. On the way, we’ll be led by local residents who will be sharing anecdotes about people, history and regeneration. We can’t think of a better way to get to know the unique community that is Canalside.

The plan for the whole day

10am-1pm — Humans of Canalside Storybooth @ Hoxton Market (near 198 Hoxton Street, N1 5LH) — Come down and have your portrait taken by photographer Marcia Chandra, share a story about the Canalside area, and get a free printed image to take home. The Canalside Residents’ Association will also be joining us to share info and answer questions.

12-4pm — Bryant Court Garden Launch (off Whiston Road, E2 8EG) — our partner, Charushila, will be hosting an afternoon event to introduce residents and neighbours to the redesign of the greenspace. There will be gardening workshops, information, and a chance to get your hands dirty.

4:30-8:30pm – A Taste of Canalside Party @ Whitmore Community Centre (2-4 Phillipp Street, N1 5NU) — Join us for a free evening of activities and food for all ages:

  • Humans of Canalside Photo Exhibition of resident portraits and stories
  • “Pub” Quiz with prizes, hosted by Canalside Residents’ Association
  • Pin your stories on the Canalside Community Map produced by the Golden Age Club and Simple Acts on Canalside
  • Table tennis and kids’ games
  • BBQ & music organised by Youth of Haggerston
  • Community Food Tasting – bring your favourite dish to share with neighbours and friends!
  • The Canalside Film Trail will start at 6:30pm and we’ll be coming back to the community centre for some more nibbles and a bit of wine to celebrate!

The event is coordinated as part of our Moving Worlds activity and has been supported through the Community First Neighbourhood Matched Fund programme administered by CDF for the Office for Civil Society.

Get involved!

We need volunteers to help us coordinate the event. If you’d like to help out, get in touch with Justin (justinos@blueyonder.co.uk) or Lauren (canalside@outlook.com).

If you have a story to share and you’d like to be one of the speakers on the Canalside Film Trail, we’d love to hear from you! We’re also looking for old pictures or videos taken of people, homes and places around Whitmore, Haggerston or Bryant Court before and during regeneration that we can use in the film projections. Contact Marcia (info@humansofcanalside.org or 07854638302).
